Late Payments Rise as More Consumers Enter Market

ID-10052196

Typically when we report on the state of finance in the auto industry, it is to highlight how much something has decreased since the collapse a few short years ago.  We look at the reports that the credit unions put out and have seen a consistent trend in the lower of overdue loans.  However, a recent report from Transunion has shown growth in that very area.  While this may seem like terrible news to see, there is a silver lining underneath it all.

TransUnion is reporting that late payments on loans have grown about 1.1 percent in the last three months of 2013.  Still, the late payment rate is below 1.3 percent overall, a good sign.

The reason I don’t see an issue with the rise in payment delinquency is because it is showing that more people are back in the market.  Some have been forced in, due to an aging vehicle, but many more are coming back into because of the availability of financing and due to a stream of high quality new vehicles.

If anything, it is a sign that people need to step extra carefully when getting a loan.  We’ve provided tips before on how to best prepare to get an auto loan so that you will not end up a statistic on the delinquency rates.

Bad Credit Auto Loan Advice

ID-10088178

Bad credit is a term that is has many different meanings and one thing that it doesn’t mean is that everything is over. Having the label of ‘bad’ attached to you doesn’t mean that you might as well stay at home rather than try to get an auto loan. Like I said earlier, just because you have ‘bad’ credit doesn’t mean that you have credit that will keep you from getting a good loan. Bad means many things and here is some advice on how to get an auto loan even with bad credit.

First tip is not to trust the people who tell you that your credit is bad. Find out your score for yourself. Get a hold of your credit score with Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion to see your credit score and to see how bad it really is. Keep in mind that there are a lot of variables that change the ability to get credit. Even bad credit with a long history can still work compared to someone with good credit and no credit history.

Another tip is that when you’re finally ready to go in for a loan, it’s better to take a longer look at the terms of the loan and not the monthly payments. Sure it would be nice to pay a lesser amount, but sometimes it’s a much more financially beneficial boon to get a vehicle paid off as early as possible. Plus, a loan is better overall if it requires more money each month but has the lowest APR.

The last tip for this piece is to have a cosigner available. The best choice is someone close, such as a relative. Be careful with this one though as cosigner on a vehicle is a sign of trust and one that you need to be careful about.

How to Spot ID Theft on Your Credit Report

ID-10060832An important aspect of qualifying for an auto loan, even with troubled credit, is your credit score.  One of the best ways an applicant can prepare for the process is to go over their report and ensure that everything listed is correct.  Any number of things can work against you, which is why everyone always recommends a look over before making any major financial decisions.  Be on the lookout for anything that doesn’t match up with your own records.  If you see something wrong, get it taken care of.  Another thing to be aware of if you see something unfamiliar on your credit report is that you may be a victim of identity theft.

TransUnion has some tips to help make sure you can avoid being a victim.  There are certain signs in your report that may point to fraud.  Here’s what you need to keep an eye out for:

  • If you see any accounts, payment histories, addresses, inquires, or Social Security Numbers that you don’t recognize.
  • If an unknown creditor tells you they got an application with your name and Social Security on it that you were unaware of.
  • If you’re getting calls or letters informing you of being approved or denied for credit but never applied.
  • If you have gotten credit card, utility, or telephone statements that are in your name but you never applied.
  • If you notice that your mail, including credit card statements, is not always being delivered to you.
  • If there are credit card purchases you don’t recognize.
  • If a collection agency contacts you about collecting on an account you never opened.

These are all important signs that someone has gotten ahold of your information and are using it for malicious purposes.  Make sure you are aware so that you can work to protect yourself.  Don’t let a thief drag down your credit and along with it the ability to apply for credit.
